A Day Without Mexicans

I was curious what it was going to be like yesterday. The illegal immigrants were desecrating Lilly's birthday by having their boycott and demonstrations. Last time they had one, I had jumped off the freeway in downtown to avoid the jammed freeway, and they had shut down the street that I usually take as my short cut, in Chinatown of all places!!! I took my camera along this time in case there was anything to see.

Turns out there wasn't. The day turned out to be a pleasant surprise for a lot of people. It took twenty minutes less on the freeway going to and coming from work. My place of employment had put out a notice that anyone who didn't want to come to work that day could take the day off, and make up their hours on Friday, so when I got there it was me and the one other senior machinist. Joe showed up around 9. I thought about setting up my camera and getting a picture of the three of us, but didn't. The plant manager came in for a while... he's an immigrant, I don't know why he wasn't boycotting... of course, he's legal and from Canada!!!

And the mexicans??? I asked around today. Not a one of them that I spoke to went to any rallies or anything. Mostly just stayed home. They talked to one protester on the radio yesterday who showed his ignorance by saying that you could see the economic impact of the boycott by the fact that the Dow Jones and NASDAQ were both down!!! Here's an idea, a one day boycott isn't going to work. If you didn't buy it yesterday, you'll be buying it today. How about a month or six months or something meaningful??? Show your economic strength!!! The crowd at the first rally was estimated at 250,000, and the second, church of child molesters sanctioned rally was estimated at 400,000, although several of those were probably carried over from the first one. In their press conference today they claimed two million, based on their own estimates.

I did see a van pulled over on the side of the freeway by several police cars, and the Latino woman and child being escorted back towards the cruisers, while the man was still up by the van with the officers. I have no idea what was going on there. Other than that and wide open freeways, I saw almost nothing firsthand. That was one of the main things that people were talking about, the open roads. That yellow journalism rag that I subscribe to, the Los Angeles Times, buried that story on the 16th page. If that is what its like when the illeagals aren't out on the freeways, then once again, I'm encouraging a month or longer boycott!!!

I'm confused. Do you feel sorry for the illegal immigrants or you do not? What is your stand on the issue? well, besides the open highway. Or I could just mmob.

This could be a long, involved reply, Panky... All I was trying to do with this post was report what I saw firsthand, which wasn't much. Open roads, the mexicans I work with not getting involved other than not working, and a lot of gas from the protesters themselves. I am firmly against illegal immigration. However, having said that, you can hardly blame people (many of whom I know and like) for fleeing a third world country as an economic refugee. These protesters are demanding full amnesty. If they get it, where does it end??? They did the amnesty thing a few years ago, and we're full up of illegals again. We have a dysfunctional law enforcement system that turns a blind eye, business who like having cheap labor, and politicians who will do nothing to toughen up against illegal immigration, because they are owned by big business. The callers I was hearing on the radio yesterday confirmed what a lot of people assert: Our roads are far less congested, our emergency rooms were not over run, students were able to actually learn something. I find it appalling that in a post 9/11 world, we are allowing such a porous border.

Well, That about sums it up! Thanks AYe for your reply. I think I was looking more for a solution and wondering if you did understand their point of view too, which you do.
: )

I have always felt that a strong Homeland Security task force, including the borders, should have and could have been achieved after 9/11, instead of all the money wasted on the war and death of our boys.

The US has gone backwards, since 9/11.
Saddens me beyond belief.

I just hope that this flack does not create further bigotry or discrimination against Mexicans in a whole, they belong here too and many are legal. There are many illegal immigrants of all races. I just get tired of all the hate I see since 9/11. It's as if we are all turning against one and other, which seems to always come back to poor leadership, no solutions and fear. Imo

Naomi, I agree with the ones that are already here and a good plan in the future for accepting more, before they come over illegally.

seems as though the security measures/steps taken were more against innocent American Citizens, rather then for them.

The borders need to be strengthened, yesterday.imo too
for now.
